At times like this, continuing with ones life seems impossible...and eating the entire contents of ones fridge, inevitable.
- Bridget Jones

Once upon a time, a fresh-faced thirteen year-old L watched Bridget Jones and laughed at the tragedy of the situation. Nine years on, an older and on occasion wiser L has seen the film enough times to quote from memory and to understand that spanx are not to be trivialised.

Love my London life as I do, I've come to realise that real life is not always a bed of roses. Sometimes, rubbish days happen to good people. And when they do, it is very easy to crawl home and merge with one's sofa in a mass of self-pity and despair.

While I am cautious to suggest that baked goods are the answer to most problems, they're a good place to start. Bridget chose vodka and Chaka Khan. I choose cake, in a mug.

The beautiful thing about this cake is that it can be made with the contents of aforementioned fridge, and is ready to be devoured in less than five minutes. V. Good.

5 tbsp self-raising flour
4 tbsp castor sugar
1 tbsp cocoa powder
3 tbsp vegetable oil
3tbsp milk
1 egg
1 tsp orange extract

Arm yourself with your favourite mug and a tablespoon. Spoon the flour, sugar and cocoa into the mug, and mix quickly. Add the oil, milk, egg and orange extract, then beat with a fork until smooth and silky.

Pop your mug in the microwave, and whizz for 2 minutes at full power. Once the time is up, see if the top has cooked. Your cake is ready when the top half is sponge, the bottom half a filthy hot chocolate orange goo.

Dive in.

  1. Thank you for a lovely recipe. I made this a few minutes ago. It is really easy and quick! I used melted butter, though instead of the oil. I think it makes the cooking time less. I made two. The first one was quite dry after 2 minutes and the second one just right with half dry and half sauce. I do have a stronger wattage microwave that could be the reason as well. Thanks for a great recipe! Kindest regards,

  2. The second one, I cooked for one and a half minutes
